Bloom

Bloom was a project made in collaboration with Alyra Strand, Mitchell Zeller, Bryce Farmer & Joseph Ingram

Role: Fabrication lead

Bloom is a prototype for an interactive installation / experience proposal exploring the wonder and mystery of ocean life.

This exhibition proposed a variety of sized interactive jellyfish to fill a gallery space. The jellyfish includes two primary modes of interaction; through touch and sound that illicit changes of colour and sound emission. When no interaction is present, the jellyfish has a soft pulsing light display which simulates breathing or the pulsing movement of natural jellyfish movement. These interactions are created using led lights controlled by a microbit.

Materiality & Construction

The main body of the jellyfish was constructed using a sturdy frame to withstand interaction, covered with translucent paper to echo the nature of jellyfish and show the lights from the interior of the structure. The ethereal tentacles are made from a mass of individual strips of fabric with a variety of material qualities to create texture with each fabric reacting to the light in a different way.
